Canada surtaxes on select goods from the United States
New surtaxes for certain U.S.-origin goods imported into Canada went into effect on July 1, 2018. According to the Canada Department of Finance, the surtaxes are in response to the Section 232 tariffs imposed by the U.S. on imports of Canadian aluminum and steel products.
The surtaxes only apply to goods that are eligible to be marked as U.S. goods in accordance with the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Regulations. The surtaxes apply to three categories of U.S.-origin goods, which are listed here. The products described by tariff number in Table 1 (Steel products) are subject to a 25 percent surtax. The products described by tariff number in Table 2 (Aluminum products) and Table 3 (Other products) are subject to a 10 percent surtax.
The surtaxes do not apply to U.S.-origin goods that were in transit to Canada on the July 1, 2018 effective date.
