Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA)
On July 8, Canada and the European Union issued a joint statement announcing September 21, 2017, as the date for the provisional implementation of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).
CETA is a wide-ranging free trade agreement that covers virtually all sectors and aspects of Canada-EU trade in order to reduce or eliminate barriers. CETA is expected to create jobs, strengthen economic relations and boost trade for the countries involved.
The statement notes that the agreement will enter definitively into force once all of the EU member states have ratified the agreement. To date, Latvia, Denmark, Spain and Croatia have voted to formally approve CETA.
