WTSA Carriers Plan to Raise Trans-Pacific Rates

Ocean carriers in the Westbound Transpacific Stabilization Agreement (WTSA) have announced in a Notice to Customers that they are adopting a series of voluntary guideline general rate increases (GRIs) for all cargoes (including exempt commodities) moving on member line vessels to all Asian destinations.  Guideline dates and GRI amounts are as follows:

Effective December 1, 2009

Dry Cargo
$100 per FEU / $80 per TEU via Southern California ports
$150 per FEU / $120 per TEU via other U.S. West Coast, U.S. East Coast and intermodal

Effective : January 15, 2010

Refrigerated Cargo
$250 per FEU / $200 per TEU via U.S. West Coast
$300 per FEU / $240 per TEU via U.S. East Coast and intermodal

Earlier, on July 30, 2009, WTSA lines had announced a GRI for all cargoes (including exempt commodities) moving to all destinations on member line vessels, effective September 1, 2009. Guideline GRI amounts were as follows:

Dry Cargo
$150 per FEU / $120 per TEU via U.S. West Coast
$200 per FEU / $160 per TEU via U.S. East Coast, Gulf Coast and intermodal

Refrigerated Cargo
$250 per FEU / $200 per TEU via U.S. West Coast
$300 per FEU / $240 per TEU via U.S. East Coast, Gulf Coast and intermodal

The WTSA Notice to Customers states that member carriers develop rate guidelines based on an on-going review of the U.S.-Asia freight market.  The review examines overall economic conditions and specific trends in the movement of major commodities in the various country markets.
